Descender Vol. 2: Machine Moon by Jeff Lemire + Dustin Nguyen Review

descender-volume-2-machine-moonDescender Volume 2: Machine Moon by Jeff Lemire + Dustin Nguyen (Artist)

Publisher: Image Comics

Release Date: May 10, 2016

Pages: 116

Summary: Young Robot boy TIM-21 and his companions struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet.

My Rating:★★★★☆ ½

My Thoughts: Machine Moon expands the world delivered in Volume 1, while giving a spotlight on characters this time around!

Volume 2 centers on TIM-21, Dr. Quon, and Telsa as they are taken to Machine Moon by Psius, a city based on an asteroid which acts as a safe haven for robots.

There TIM-21 spends time with TIM-22, a clone to -21, and as the story progresses -21 reveals more about his past human companion Andy and through TIM-22 is able to discuss /explain his more human side, considering he learned through Andy.

Telsa is very suspicious of Psius and his intentions and is eager to leave as soon as possible. Yet as she stays, she comes to learn she’s growing more attached to TIM-21 and wants him to be safe.

Additionally Andy himself makes an appearance. Much older, he’s now a hunter who travels to different planets and makes money off the scraps he finds. However, he has one very important mission. Find TIM-21.

He soon finds himself with Bandit and the rest of Telsa’s crew from Volume 1 as he continues his search for TIM.

Andy is definitely my favorite character considering there was so much revealed about his past and himself as a character in quite a short story, compared to Vol. 1.

The plot itself is rather slow paced compared to volume 1, however the main characters go through much development, even the ones just introduced.

And the ending definitely took me by surprise! I cannot wait for Volume 3!

As with volume 1, the art is stunning and definitely some color contrasts between Andy’s + TIM-21/Telsa/Dr.Quon’s POV’s which definitely adds more depth to the story as a whole.

The space adventure continues in Machine Moon with incredible characters and development! A shocking ending will definitely leave the reader eager for Volume 3!

Summary: Young Robot boy TIM-21 and his companions struggle to stay alive in a universe where all androids have been outlawed and bounty hunters lurk on every planet. Written by award-winning creator, Jeff Lemire, Descender is a rip-roaring and heart-felt cosmic odyssey. Lemire pits humanity against machine, and world against world, to create a sprawling epic.

My Rating:★★★★☆ ½

My Thoughts: An epic Sci-Fi tale that pits human against machine!

Sci-Fi isn’t usually my genre of choice, however I’ve great luck find such fascinating and entertaining comics and graphic novels, I decided to give Descender a try!

Reading this graphic novel reminded me why this genre is so unique and captivating.

The story centers around a universe where man and machine live in harmony, then giant robots called Harvesters begin attacking and millions are killed, which does not fare well for both humans and robots.

10 years later, robots have become outlawed and no one is close to figuring out what exactly the Harvesters are or what they want.

An abandoned mining colony on a distant planet may have the answer.

Enter TIM-21, an artificial boy who was created for the sole purpose to be a companion for the son of his host family.

Soon he’s being chased by bounty hunters and scrappers, but a once respected scientist/engineer wants to find him to figure out who the Harvesters are and believes TIM-21 may be the key.

While it jumps right in, you definitely learn more about the overall world along the way and its absolutely fascinating.

The most memorable part of the world-building are the unique settings shown and the overall exploration of AI Technology and robotics!

The characters + character development is absolutely fantastic! While its mostly an introduction the characters grow and change over the course of this volume and they are so many layers to them I can’t wait to read volume 2 and discover more about this world and characters.

There’s non-stop action, plot-twists, space crews, and fascinating characters that will keep you hooked!

Aside from the fast paced story, the watercolor artwork is stunning! Its very subtle and light in tone, but delivers such stunning visuals.

If your a fan of Sci-Fi,robots/AI, and space adventures, definitely check out Descender Volume 1: Tin Stars! You won’t be disappointed!

By Your Side, her upcoming 2017 YA Contemporary: When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?”

Mirror In The Sky by Aditi Khorana Review

Mirror In The Sky June 21Mirror In The Sky by Aditi Khorana

Publisher: Razorbill

Release Date: June 21, 2016

Pages: 352

Summary: For Tara Krishnan, navigating Brierly, the academically rigorous prep school she attends on scholarship, feels overwhelming and impossible. Her junior year begins in the wake of a startling discovery: A message from an alternate Earth, light years away, is intercepted by NASA. This means that on another planet, there is another version of Tara, a Tara who could be living better, burning brighter, because of tiny differences in her choices.

The world lights up with the knowledge of Terra Nova, the mirror planet, and Tara’s life on Earth begins to change. At first, small shifts happen, like attention from Nick Osterman, the most popular guy at Brierly, and her mother playing hooky from work to watch the news all day. But eventually those small shifts swell, the discovery of Terra Nova like a black hole, bending all the light around it.

As a new era of scientific history dawns and Tara’s life at Brierly continues its orbit, only one thing is clear: Nothing on Earth–or for Tara–will ever be the same again.

My Rating: ★★★☆☆ ½

My Thoughts: A wonderfully written debut that mixes Sci-Fi w/ Contemporary!

This felt very reminiscent of Tommy Wallach’s We Looked Up regardless, Khorana brings a very unique story with a variety of elements, like politics, race, even scientific theory!

When Terra Nova (a mirror planet to Earth) is first introduced I was definitely interested to learn more about its origins and how it would impact the lives of everyday people.

With news broadcasts, various theories + Tara’s POV this mirror planet brought up many fascinating questions of whether or not Terra Nova could possibly reflect an alternate timeline/universe which was fascinating!

However there were a few problems I had:

1.Pacing

If a plot drags for a big portion of the novel, I will most likely not give it a full 5 stars and overall I found the pace for Mirror to be extremely slow.

2.Tara Nova/Plot

Tara Nova was a very unique concept that I don’t think I’d ever read in another novel before. That said, I wish it was discussed more + given more of a central role in this novel.

Because in the beginning it is discussed, however the novel ended up focusing more on Tara’s new friends (popular kids) & the drama that goes on between them & Terra Nova was then left in the background.

It became more of a YA-Contemporary than the Contemporary/Sci-Fi I was expecting.

Leaving Tara all alone junior year, Meg leaves for the first semester to be in Argentina. Tara wishes things could be different. Soon she gets her wish.

After attempting to save Halle’s (most popular girl in school) dog, she soon becomes friends with the popular kids and her long-time crush Nick starts talking to her!

She believes it may be Terra Nova!
But soon things begin to take a different turn. Her mother becomes obsessed with Terra Nova & decides its best if she leave to not only find herself, but understand what exactly Terra Nova is!

Tara becomes tangled in friendship drama +comes to see the effects/reaction of Terra Nova brings to her school.

While the plot itself definitely introduced interesting elements + I really did enjoy reading from Tara’s POV (the politics of HS/some science here & there of TN + how she came to understand the popular kids + feel more connected with some of them) I felt the plot just mostly focused on the drama that went on w/ her new friends & I was expecting a more broad view of Terra Nova.

I will admit the ending was definitely unexpected (Halle’s disappearance) Did not see that coming!!
Now I really want to know what happened to her b/c that was such an open ending!!

While it wasn’t necessarily for me, it definitely delivers well developed/realistic characters + a variety of social/political elements with a unique concept!

Regardless of these issues, with a mix of genres, wonderful writing style and unique concept such as this, I am definitely interested to read more of Aditi’s work!

Kate Triumph by Shari Arnold Review

Kate Triumph by Shari ArnoldKate Triumph by Shari Arnold

Publisher: CreateSpace

Release Date: October 16, 2014

Pages: 288

Summary: Normal is so overrated.

At least that’s what seventeen-year-old Kate Triumph tells herself everyday. But the truth is she lives in constant fear that someone will discover how not normal she really is. With her startling speed and her unusual ability to heal, Kate believes she’s something of a freak.

Then Andrew Shore arrives.

He claims he’s her father, sticks around for a few days and leaves her a plane ticket. “Come to Mercer Island,” he says. “Give me a chance to get to know you.” Soon Kate is floundering in a world of new: new address, new car, new high school and, of course, new father. Not to mention Zack, her intriguing new neighbor, who makes her want to abandon her steadfast rule of never allowing anyone to get too close. But when she discovers someone is trying to kill her, life for Kate gets a bit more complicated. And a lot less normal.

My Rating:Full StarFull StarFull StarFull Starhalf star--Book Blog

My Thoughts: Perfect for fans of superhero stories+ Great mix of action, suspense/mystery + a little romance!

This book was spectacular, fantastic, perfection! (I can go on & on ❤ <3)

I don’t usually read superhero/origin stories but I had this one on my TBR for quite some time & felt it was the perfect time to read it!

As stated above, this novel has a superhero vibe & it kept me turning the page!

I loved reading from Kate’s POV! She is such a complex heroine & it was fun trying to better understand her abilities and overall just see her development/growth as she tries to accept/better understand her mother’s death!

Her abilities (super speed/ healing) were introduced very early on & it was interesting to see how her super speed was deep-rooted with her love of running/track.

And how her abilities really influenced her childhood! (Her mother being overly protective/cautioning her to not show her abilities)

The plot is unique and really keeps you guessing/connecting the dots!

When Kate+her mom get in a car accident, Kate’s life is changed forever!

With her mother’s passing, she comes to know her father Andrew and he convinces her its best she goes w/ him to Mercer Island in Seattle for a short time!

From there she grieves the loss of her mother, while adjusting to a new school!
She comes to meet her neighbors Zack+Brandon and comes to find out the secrets her father is hiding from her!

The intrigue/mystery is seamlessly weaved into the story and keeps the book at a rapid pace!

My only minor issue was there were moments here and there where I felt Kate’s ability origins connected w/ her mother’s past could have had a little more explanation!

The setting of Seattle really went well with the overall dark/mysterious tone of the story + the characters are all wonderfully developed and all have an important role in Kate’s life/overall plot!

There is romance weaved into the plot, but I felt it was done so well! It develops slowly and gives more development to Kate who usually had a protective/cautious parent. Also she slowly but surely took chances and opened up to more people such as her father, new neighbors, and friends at her new school!

Now some spoilers:

She comes to learn more about her mother + Andrew and their pasts:
(It was weaved into the story & made perfect sense w/ the overall tone of the story!)
Olivia’s treatments & how that led to Kate getting abilities
+ how Andrew’s life as a spy led to Olivia leaving + Andrew’s plans to keep Kate safe!

+ Throughout the story a character by the name of Jonah continues to find a way to reach Kate/Olivia (Kate’s mother)
There are hints here and there about his past & why he may be looking for them!
Around 3/4 way through I figured out why! (He is Kate’s brother!!!)

*End Of Spoilers*

I wish there would be a SEQUEL!! The ending is open ended where everything is revealed but I NEED MORE!! ❤ ❤

I definitely wouldn’t mind another Kate Triumph book!

Overall this is a fast-pace, action packed superhero tale in the making!
The intrigue/mystery definitely keeps your turning the page the dark/mysterious tone + the twists/turns will leave you wanting more!

Highly recommend this book!

+ Here is a summary: These are the things that I’ve always wanted:

To get the top grades in my class.

To make my grandmother proud.

And most of all, proof that I could succeed where the rest of my family had not: a Stanford acceptance letter, early admission.

My mother and my sister were obsessed with boys and love and sex. So obsessed that they lost sight of their futures, of whatthey wanted. And in the end, they lost everything.

I’ll never let a boy distract me. I promised my grandmother that.

But that was before Tate.

Before the biggest pop star on the planet took an interest in me.

Before private planes and secret dates and lyrics meant for me alone.

There’s so much I don’t know. Like why he left music. Where he goes when we’re not together. What dark past he’s hiding. But when we kiss, the future feels far away. And now…I’m not sure what I want.

Firefly meets Dune in this YA Sci-fi adventure!

Summary: Qole is the captain of the Kaitan, a starship that uses magnetic nets to “fish” for Shadow, a volatile cosmic energy. Shadow is dangerous, can cause madness and death, but as the last generation of a native fishing family, her DNA and heritage give her a unique connection to it, a power over it. Qole is determined use that “affinity” to protect her small but loyal crew of misfits, orphans, and outlaws. Which is why she’s so suspicious of offworlder Nev, her startlingly handsome new crew member.

What Qole doesn’t know is that Nev is actually Prince Nevarian Dracorte. He’s convinced that Shadow is the key to preserving the royal Dracorte legacy, and that Qole is the key to harnessing its power. When her cooperation proves difficult, Nev resolves to get her back to his home planet by any means necessary, but he’s not the only one. A rival royal family is also after Shadow affinity, and unlike Nev, they’re more interested in gaining Qole’s abilities than keeping her alive. His mission to exploit her becomes one to save her, and to survive, she’ll have to trust her would-be kidnapper. The Kaitan’s crew goes from fishermen to prey as they make a death-defying run across the galaxy, and Qole and Nev are forced to revise their ideas of family and loyalty, with the fate of their worlds hanging in the balance.

May 17 Some Kind Of Happiness
Publisher: S&S Books For Young Readers May 17

1.Some Kind Of Happiness by Claire Legrand

Summary: THINGS FINLEY HART DOESN’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT

• Her parents, who are having problems. (But they pretend like they’re not.)
• Being sent to her grandparents’ house for the summer.
• Never having met said grandparents.
• Her blue days—when life feels overwhelming, and it’s hard to keep her head up. (This happens a lot.)

Finley’s only retreat is the Everwood, a forest kingdom that exists in the pages of her notebook. Until she discovers the endless woods behind her grandparents’ house and realizes the Everwood is real–and holds more mysteries than she’d ever imagined, including a family of pirates that she isn’t allowed to talk to, trees covered in ash, and a strange old wizard living in a house made of bones.

With the help of her cousins, Finley sets out on a mission to save the dying Everwood and uncover its secrets. But as the mysteries pile up and the frightening sadness inside her grows, Finley realizes that if she wants to save the Everwood, she’ll first have to save herself.

2. The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye

Summary: Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the Tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the Tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love… or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear… the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

May 24 The Last Star
Publisher: GP Putnams Sons BYR May 24

3. The Last Star by Rick Yancey (The 5th Wave #3)

Summary: ‘Wildly entertaining . . . I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough’ The New York Times

We’re here, then we’re gone, and that was true before they came. That’s always been true. The Others didn’t invent death; they just perfected it. Gave death a face to put back in our face, because they knew that was the only way to crush us. It won’t end on any continent or ocean, no mountain or plain, jungle or desert. It will end where it began, where it had been from the beginning, on the battlefield of the last beating human heart.

Publisher: HarperTeen May 31

5.Wanderlost by Jen Malone

But when her older sister, Elizabeth, gets into real trouble, Aubree is talked into taking over Elizabeth’s summer job, leading a group of senior citizens on a bus tour through Europe.

Aubree doesn’t even make it to the first stop in Amsterdam before their perfect plan unravels, leaving her with no phone, no carefully prepared binder full of helpful facts, and an unexpected guest: the tour company owner’s son, Sam. Considering she’s pretending to be Elizabeth, she absolutely shouldn’t fall for him, but she can’t help it, especially with the most romantic European cities as the backdrop for their love story.

But her relationship with Sam is threatening to ruin her relationship with her sister, and she feels like she’s letting both of them down. Aubree knows this trip may show her who she really is—she just hopes she likes where she ends up.
