The Midnight Star by Marie Lu Review

The Midnight Star Cover RevealThe Midnight Star by Marie Lu (TYE #3)

Publisher: G.P.  Putnam’s Son’s Books For Young Readers

Release Date: October 11, 2016

Pages: 316

Summary:There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen.

Adelina Amouteru is done suffering. She’s turned her back on those who have betrayed her and achieved the ultimate revenge: victory. Her reign as the White Wolf has been a triumphant one, but with each conquest her cruelty only grows. The darkness within her has begun to spiral out of control, threatening to destroy all that she’s achieved.

Adelina’s forced to revisit old wounds when a new danger appears, putting not only Adelina at risk, but every Elite and the very world they live in. In order to save herself and preserve her empire, Adelina and her Roses must join the Daggers on a perilous quest—though this uneasy alliance may prove to be the real danger.

Bestselling author Marie Lu concludes Adelina’s story with this haunting and hypnotizing final installment to the Young Elites series.

My Rating:★★★★☆ ½

My Thoughts: A stunning conclusion to a dark and epic fantasy trilogy!

As with any Marie Lu book, you can see that she really understands her characters and they truly shine on the page.

What I adore about her books is the way she approaches character/character-development!

With The Young Elites Trilogy as a whole, Adelina was truly the heart and driving-force of this story and it was great being able to join her on the ups & downs of her journey!

Adelina has taken her role as queen, but is still struggles with her inner darkness and the betrayal she feels from Violetta.

It was fascinating seeing Adelina’s development and how her position influenced and changed her along the way.

As for plot (without going into specifics) I was truly surprised at the turn of each page. Marie is a master at keeping her plot fast-paced and truly original ❤️💕

With the plot/characters as the main focus, there was still room for world-building in terms of the magic, gods, and travel which expanded on the world Marie crafted.

While in the last book, I personally found it hard to still get a full grasp of this world (in terms of visuals), there were so many fantastic elements of this final novel overall that it was a blast to read!

In terms of the ending (which I won’t spoil) I was really surprised, but I felt Marie wrapped it up perfectly!

Overall Marie delivers a fast-paced finale with a fantastic plot, incredible character development, and wonderfully concludes an unforgettable anti-hero tale!

But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. + Here is a summary: These are the things that I’ve always wanted:

To get the top grades in my class.

To make my grandmother proud.

And most of all, proof that I could succeed where the rest of my family had not: a Stanford acceptance letter, early admission.

My mother and my sister were obsessed with boys and love and sex. So obsessed that they lost sight of their futures, of whatthey wanted. And in the end, they lost everything.

I’ll never let a boy distract me. I promised my grandmother that.

But that was before Tate.

Before the biggest pop star on the planet took an interest in me.

Before private planes and secret dates and lyrics meant for me alone.

There’s so much I don’t know. Like why he left music. Where he goes when we’re not together. What dark past he’s hiding. But when we kiss, the future feels far away. And now…I’m not sure what I want.

Firefly meets Dune in this YA Sci-fi adventure!

Summary: Qole is the captain of the Kaitan, a starship that uses magnetic nets to “fish” for Shadow, a volatile cosmic energy. Shadow is dangerous, can cause madness and death, but as the last generation of a native fishing family, her DNA and heritage give her a unique connection to it, a power over it. Qole is determined use that “affinity” to protect her small but loyal crew of misfits, orphans, and outlaws. Which is why she’s so suspicious of offworlder Nev, her startlingly handsome new crew member.

What Qole doesn’t know is that Nev is actually Prince Nevarian Dracorte. He’s convinced that Shadow is the key to preserving the royal Dracorte legacy, and that Qole is the key to harnessing its power. When her cooperation proves difficult, Nev resolves to get her back to his home planet by any means necessary, but he’s not the only one. A rival royal family is also after Shadow affinity, and unlike Nev, they’re more interested in gaining Qole’s abilities than keeping her alive. His mission to exploit her becomes one to save her, and to survive, she’ll have to trust her would-be kidnapper. The Kaitan’s crew goes from fishermen to prey as they make a death-defying run across the galaxy, and Qole and Nev are forced to revise their ideas of family and loyalty, with the fate of their worlds hanging in the balance.

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

My Thoughts: Before I get into this review, I would just like to say that with some sequels, they suffer from what I call the “Second Book Curse”, where it just doesn’t live up or does worse than the first one. However, after reading Marie Lu’s Legend Trilogy, there is one thing that she is great at and that is sequels. (Obviously she also great with trilogies too :’D) She really understands her characters and is able to develop them even further with each novel. After reading The Young Elites last year, I was surprised at how dark Adelina was. I didn’t think she could get much darker, but after reading The Rose Society, I was wrong. Wanting to get revenge on those who wronged her, she sets out on a quest to find a new group of elites and prove to them how powerful she is.

What Marie Lu is also great at, is writing differing POV’s. With the new perspectives in this book, they all had their own voice and it was easy to differ them from each other.

Adelina is much darker in this book and you can tell, with the plans she develops and her inner thoughts of others around her. I really loved Magiano in this book. He was a great addition to Adelina’s team. What I was waiting for was Enzo’s return! And once he did, sadly we knew he wouldn’t be the same.

Being a hollow shell of what he once was, he becomes more powerful and is able to control who is linked to (Adelina) and vice-versa. Teren, losing faith in Giulietta, joins Adelina’s team and kills Giulietta out of anger and feeling betrayed. I honestly did not think he would end up going through with that.

By the end, Adelina takes control and out of anger of what is revealed of the Elites powers, she lashes out at Violetta. With a darkness running through her, she now rules with an empty feeling inside her.

Overall, this book is a huge leap from book one. With more character development and plot twists to keep you guessing for the next book.

The only reason I took away 1/2 a star is b/c, I feel like with Marie’s new series, I don’t really feel connected to the setting/world like I did with the Legend Trilogy. But maybe once book 3 comes I will have a better grasp of the world.

If you read The Rose Society, what are your thoughts? 🙂
