The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it? She wouldn’t say.

Mary survived six years in baby jail before being dumped in a group home. The house isn’t really “home”—no place where you fear for your life can be considered a home. Home is Ted, who she meets on assignment at a nursing home.

There wasn’t a point to setting the record straight before, but now she’s got Ted—and their unborn child—to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary must find the voice to fight her past. And her fate lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. The Midnight Star by Marie Lu Review

The Midnight Star Cover RevealThe Midnight Star by Marie Lu (TYE #3)

Publisher: G.P.  Putnam’s Son’s Books For Young Readers

Release Date: October 11, 2016

Pages: 316

Summary:There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen.

Adelina Amouteru is done suffering. She’s turned her back on those who have betrayed her and achieved the ultimate revenge: victory. Her reign as the White Wolf has been a triumphant one, but with each conquest her cruelty only grows. The darkness within her has begun to spiral out of control, threatening to destroy all that she’s achieved.

Adelina’s forced to revisit old wounds when a new danger appears, putting not only Adelina at risk, but every Elite and the very world they live in. In order to save herself and preserve her empire, Adelina and her Roses must join the Daggers on a perilous quest—though this uneasy alliance may prove to be the real danger.

Bestselling author Marie Lu concludes Adelina’s story with this haunting and hypnotizing final installment to the Young Elites series.

My Rating:★★★★☆ ½

My Thoughts: A stunning conclusion to a dark and epic fantasy trilogy!

As with any Marie Lu book, you can see that she really understands her characters and they truly shine on the page.

What I adore about her books is the way she approaches character/character-development!

With The Young Elites Trilogy as a whole, Adelina was truly the heart and driving-force of this story and it was great being able to join her on the ups & downs of her journey!

Adelina has taken her role as queen, but is still struggles with her inner darkness and the betrayal she feels from Violetta.

It was fascinating seeing Adelina’s development and how her position influenced and changed her along the way.

As for plot (without going into specifics) I was truly surprised at the turn of each page. Marie is a master at keeping her plot fast-paced and truly original ❤️💕

With the plot/characters as the main focus, there was still room for world-building in terms of the magic, gods, and travel which expanded on the world Marie crafted.

While in the last book, I personally found it hard to still get a full grasp of this world (in terms of visuals), there were so many fantastic elements of this final novel overall that it was a blast to read!

In terms of the ending (which I won’t spoil) I was really surprised, but I felt Marie wrapped it up perfectly!

Overall Marie delivers a fast-paced finale with a fantastic plot, incredible character development, and wonderfully concludes an unforgettable anti-hero tale!

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.

The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland Review

our-chemical-hearts-krystal-sutherlandOur Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland

Publisher: G.P. Putnams Sons Books For Young Readers

Release Date: October 4, 2016

Pages: 313

Summary: Henry Page has never been in love. He fancies himself a hopeless romantic, but the slo-mo, heart palpitating, can’t-eat-can’t-sleep kind of love that he’s been hoping for just hasn’t been in the cards for him—at least not yet. Instead, he’s been happy to focus on his grades, on getting into a semi-decent college and finally becoming editor of his school newspaper. Then Grace Town walks into his first period class on the third Tuesday of senior year and he knows everything’s about to change.

Grace isn’t who Henry pictured as his dream girl—she walks with a cane, wears oversized boys’ clothes, and rarely seems to shower. But when Grace and Henry are both chosen to edit the school paper, he quickly finds himself falling for her. It’s obvious there’s something broken about Grace, but it seems to make her even more beautiful to Henry, and he wants nothing more than to help her put the pieces back together again. And yet, this isn’t your average story of boy meets girl. Krystal Sutherland’s brilliant debut is equal parts wit and heartbreak, a potent reminder of the bittersweet bliss that is first love.

My Rating: ★★★★☆ ½

My Thoughts: Sutherland delivers an engaging and honest tale of first love!

Sutherland brings such life and depth to her characters, which was definitely one of the highlights of this novel!

And through her writing she made them flawed, realistic, and overall enjoyable to read about regardless if they were minor/central characters. All were wonderfully written!

Henry has a core group of friends: Lola & Murray. Quite a central part of this story and through the ups and downs, they are always there to help each other. The strong elements of friendship in this novel was definitely another highlight!

The plot itself is well paced and definitely has elements of mystery to it. I loved the humor weaved into this novel. This book definitely had me laughing!!

It had its dark moments, but Sutherland balanced both humor/wit and serious elements perfectly.

While this novel is tackles a topic I’ve read about in YA Contemporary before :”First Love”, it was unique because its about first love but then again it isn’t! It definitely tackles all the aspects of awkward first love, but centers more about life and personal growth, which I loved!! ❤

Additionally, I loved the aspect of Henry and Grace’s relationship that revolved around Henry coming to understand a universally important message: Its important to love someone for who they are not who you think they are or who you expect them to be.

As for writing style, being in 1st person reading from Henry’s POV not only made Our Chemical Hearts engaging+ a blast to read, but overall delivered a unique voice to this story!

However my only minor issue, was that the ending felt a little rushed!

This novel captured my heart, broke it, but golden seams brought it back together again!! 😍💖✨

Our Chemical Hearts is an unforgettable tale with elements of friendship and mystery that takes the reader on a journey of first love and everything that comes with it!

By Your Side, her upcoming 2017 YA Contemporary: When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?”

To get the top grades in my class.

To make my grandmother proud.

And most of all, proof that I could succeed where the rest of my family had not: a Stanford acceptance letter, early admission.

My mother and my sister were obsessed with boys and love and sex. So obsessed that they lost sight of their futures, of whatthey wanted. And in the end, they lost everything.

I’ll never let a boy distract me. I promised my grandmother that.

But that was before Tate.

Before the biggest pop star on the planet took an interest in me.

Before private planes and secret dates and lyrics meant for me alone.

There’s so much I don’t know. Like why he left music. Where he goes when we’re not together. What dark past he’s hiding. But when we kiss, the future feels far away. And now…I’m not sure what I want.

Qole is determined use that “affinity” to protect her small but loyal crew of misfits, orphans, and outlaws. Which is why she’s so suspicious of offworlder Nev, her startlingly handsome new crew member.

What Qole doesn’t know is that Nev is actually Prince Nevarian Dracorte. He’s convinced that Shadow is the key to preserving the royal Dracorte legacy, and that Qole is the key to harnessing its power. When her cooperation proves difficult, Nev resolves to get her back to his home planet by any means necessary, but he’s not the only one. A rival royal family is also after Shadow affinity, and unlike Nev, they’re more interested in gaining Qole’s abilities than keeping her alive. His mission to exploit her becomes one to save her, and to survive, she’ll have to trust her would-be kidnapper. The Kaitan’s crew goes from fishermen to prey as they make a death-defying run across the galaxy, and Qole and Nev are forced to revise their ideas of family and loyalty, with the fate of their worlds hanging in the balance.
