The Winners Kiss by Marie Rutkoski Review

20443235The Winners Kiss by Marie Rutkoski (The Winners Trilogy #3)

Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR)

Release Date: March 29, 2016

Pages: 496

Summary: War has begun. Arin is in the thick of it with untrustworthy new allies and the empire as his enemy. Though he has convinced himself that he no longer loves Kestrel, Arin hasn’t forgotten her, or how she became exactly the kind of person he has always despised. She cared more for the empire than she did for the lives of innocent people—and certainly more than she did for him.

At least, that’s what he thinks.

In the frozen north, Kestrel is a prisoner in a brutal work camp. As she searches desperately for a way to escape, she wishes Arin could know what she sacrificed for him. She wishes she could make the empire pay for what they’ve done to her.

But no one gets what they want just by wishing.

As the war intensifies, both Kestrel and Arin discover that the world is changing. The East is pitted against the West, and they are caught in between. With so much to lose, can anybody really win?

My Rating:Full StarFull StarFull StarFull StarFull Star

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

My Thoughts:

“No battle is won without a good gamble.”

An epic conclusion to an incredible trilogy!

First and foremost, what I love about this trilogy so much is Kestrel as a character.

She is powerful not in a sense of her strength as a fighter, but through her mind and development of strategy.

This final installment, as with the past 2 novels, is presented with an exquisite writing style!

Each and every sentence carries so much weight and meaning to overall story and is delivered in such an elegant manner.

There is immense character development in this novel and can be seen through the actions each character takes. With the 3rd person POV, we see just how important perception/strategy is and how its weaved into to the main characters personality.

In addition, politics/strategy plays a huge role and weaves in perfectly with the plot.

At the start of the book, Kestrel is sent to a prison camp and she reflects on all that has happened (from what happened w/ Arin, her father, etc.). Feeling guilty she does what she can to erase those past memories.

Arin is now plays an important role in the battle between the Valorians & Herrani, while still holding onto his moments w/ Kestrel.

An aspect to plot which I really loved, was the dynamic between Arin & his god of death (which later is reveled to be himself)

As the plot continues they reunite, but Kestrel has lost important memories and Arin no longer sees her as who she once was.

While forgetting some memories, she recovers but throughout this novel there is definitely growth to Kestrel. In addition to her incredible logic, she also develops her strength through combat.

Kestrel and Arin’s relationship while important, did not remain the focus and development for their relationship was definitely there when necessary.

In terms of world-building it is definitely there, with the descriptions during battle/strategy planning. And through the characters reflecting on past events.

*This novel also has a slower pace in my opinion than the previous two, but does not make the story drag*

While reading, what I also loved about this book was the character dynamics/interactions. From conversation to battles, the writing style really sets this final book up as a strategy game with the characters each playing their part.

Overall each element from plot to politics weaved together perfectly to deliver an action-packed and stunning conclusion to The Winners Trilogy ❤ ❤

The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury Review

The Forbidden Wish.jpgThe Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury

Publisher: Razorbill

Release Date: February 23, 2016

Pages: 352

Summary: She is the most powerful Jinni of all. He is a boy from the streets. Their love will shake the world…

When Aladdin discovers Zahra’s jinni lamp, Zahra is thrust back into a world she hasn’t seen in hundreds of years—a world where magic is forbidden and Zahra’s very existence is illegal. She must disguise herself to stay alive, using ancient shape-shifting magic, until her new master has selected his three wishes.

But when the King of the Jinn offers Zahra a chance to be free of her lamp forever, she seizes the opportunity—only to discover she is falling in love with Aladdin. When saving herself means betraying him, Zahra must decide once and for all: is winning her freedom worth losing her heart?

My Rating: Full StarFull StarFull StarFull StarFull Star

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

My Thoughts:

This book was wonderful!

While this story is based on Aladdin, with each page of this story you can see Jessica really makes this story her own!

Not only was there an exquisite and vivid writing style, but the engaging plot really keeps you turning the page.

While there is a lot that happens in this story, from Zahra’s past to the ongoing war w/ the jinni, it never feels too busy and all flows wonderfully!

With Zahra wanting to be free, she makes a deal to find Zhian, a trapped Jinni prince, who is located in the royal palace!

To do so, she convinces Aladdin to use a wish to become a prince and trick the royals!

From there the plot becomes even more complex!

As the plot progressed you see Zahra, who is a very powerful jinni also go through many moments of vulnerability and learn more about herself as she fights for her freedom!

Another aspect of this book I absolutely loved was the relationship that developed between Aladdin+Zahra, from each interaction to the lines of banter.

From the plot it is obvious a relationship will be apparent, but it really grows and develops on its own as the story progresses.

With Zahra fighting for freedom and Aladdin fighting to avenge his parents, you see the complexities to their character with each and every page!

There is also so much girl-power in this book which I loved ❤ ❤

There’s the fierce princess Caspida and her tough crew at her side!

They all work together/support each other as does Zahra when the plot progresses & that made this book even more engaging!!

Captivating and exquisitely written, The Forbidden Wish is a story that really takes you to a whole new world!

If you are a fan of YA Fantasy or Retellings I highly recommend this book!

The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig Review

9780062380753The Girl From Everywhere (TGFE #1)

Publisher: Greenwillow Books

Release Date: February 16, 2016

Pages: 464

Summary: Nix has spent her entire life aboard her father’s ship, sailing across the centuries, across the world, across myth and imagination.

As long as her father has a map for it, he can sail to any time, any place, real or imagined: nineteenth-century China, the land from One Thousand and One Nights, a mythic version of Africa. Along the way they have found crewmates and friends, and even a disarming thief who could come to mean much more to Nix.

But the end to it all looms closer every day.

Her father is obsessed with obtaining the one map, 1868 Honolulu, that could take him back to his lost love, Nix’s mother. Even though getting it—and going there—could erase Nix’s very existence.

For the first time, Nix is entering unknown waters.

She could find herself, find her family, find her own fantastical ability, her own epic love.

Or she could disappear.

My Rating: Full StarFull StarFull StarFull Star

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

My Thoughts: There were so many great elements in this story!

1.The Overall Concept

Maps that can let one navigate to any place/any time?!?

I loved that from page 1!

2. Characters

My favorite character dynamic in TGFE was definitely Nix+Kash ❤ ❤

With each interaction and witty dialogue between the 2 of them, you can really tell they have a strong friendship!

With each and every other character Nix interacted w/, I truly felt I understood them by the end of the novel.

Nix overall was a well-developed character and the most complex relationship in this novel was definitely the relationship between her and her father, Slate.

They both have their own goals that they are set out on achieving and  can’t really see eye-to-eye, which brings a lot of issues that develop over the course of the story!

+ I’m all for diversity and almost all the characters are from a variety of cultural backgrounds!

3.Plot/Setting

What surprised me the most, which I loved, was the heist in this story!

I did not expect that at all, which really made me even more invested!

With this story being set mostly in 1800’s Hawaii, you definitely get lush and vivid descriptions + history/mythology seamlessly weaved into the plot!

My only minor issues which brought it down from 5-stars were:

1.Pacing

At some points I found the plot to be a little slow

2. Not enough traveling

I had only read the summary a few times and the only part of it which really stuck into my head before I started TGFE was “travel” so based on that aspect I expected more places to be explored!

Regardless of those minor issues, overall this was a lovely debut and I can’t wait for the sequel ❤ ❤

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

Rebel Of The Sands is a YA fantasy debut by Alwyn Hamilton.

Firsts by Laurie Elizabeth Flynn ARC Review

23480844Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin

Release Date: January 5, 2016

Pages: 320

***Received ARC from author through a Twitter Giveaway***

Summary: Seventeen-year-old Mercedes Ayres has an open-door policy when it comes to her bedroom, but only if the guy fulfills a specific criteria: he has to be a virgin. Mercedes lets the boys get their awkward, fumbling first times over with, and all she asks in return is that they give their girlfriends the perfect first time- the kind Mercedes never had herself.

Keeping what goes on in her bedroom a secret has been easy- so far. Her absentee mother isn’t home nearly enough to know about Mercedes’ extracurricular activities, and her uber-religious best friend, Angela, won’t even say the word “sex” until she gets married. But Mercedes doesn’t bank on Angela’s boyfriend finding out about her services and wanting a turn- or on Zach, who likes her for who she is instead of what she can do in bed.

When Mercedes’ perfect system falls apart, she has to find a way to salvage her reputation and figure out where her heart really belongs in the process.

My Rating: Full StarFull StarFull StarFull Starhalf star--Book Blog

***SPOILERS AHEAD***

My Thoughts: This book takes risks! Centering around a topic I have not seen much of in YA, it was a great read.

Mercy is fierce and unconventional, but overall a sympathetic and sincere main character. After a bad “first-time” with a long-gone boyfriend, she uses sex to set things right. Not only to feel in control and prevent herself from getting hurt again, but to help others.

However with that, she finds it difficult to form and develop relationships and find herself in all this.

Laurie does a great job with writing complex and realistic relationships (Family/Friends/Romantic).

Through Mercy’s eyes, we see how she handles relationships with her parents, Zach, Faye, and Angela. And as the book progresses, we see how her “open-door policy” causes her to reveal the depth and strength in these relationships she struggles with!

I did feel at times the book’s pacing was quite slow and the story seemed to drag at some points, but overall every other part of this book was great!

This book brings light to many topics that aren’t normally talked about in YA, such as virginity and pressures to have sex. But also shows themes of family and friendship that are prevalent all throughout.

This brave, fierce and honest debut will stay with you long after its over!
